Why need to clone the hard disk?

Through cloning/ copying a hard disk, you can duplicate your current hard disk. It’s a nice choice to duplicate your hard drive under the two following conditions:

1. Upgrade to SSD or larger disk without Apps and OS reinstallation: If you want to replace your old hard disk with SSD or a larger disk while keeping all apps & current OS, you can copy the disk to transfer all data, including OS to another one.

2. Back up your system and data for safety: Through disk copy, you can get an exact backup of what is stored on your hard disk in use. Thus you can quickly replace the original hard drive with the cloned one if the current disk is failing.

A hard drive cloning software for Windows PC: AOMEI Partition Assistant

Some might say they can use "Copy" and "Paste" to transfer data, but there're many data files that are unmovable and hidden files of the system you can't find. Without knowing the function of the disk clone, users will suffer tedious work, and even damage the disk.

AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard is a cloning software specifically developed for Windows PC users. It can help users easily and securely clone HDD and SSD to the target disk for disk upgrading or backup. With the help of AOMEI Partition Assistant, cloning is simple work. This software can work with Windows 11/10/8.1/8/7, XP, and Vista. It works well in:

Cloning system hard disk to smaller SSD with secure boot
Cloning hard drive with bad sector.
Cloning SSD with OS installed to larger SSD without boot failure.
Automatically making 4K alignment for SSD during the cloning process.

Then, how to clone the disk with AOMEI Partition Assistant? Please follow the text please follow below the text.

A step-by-step guide on how to clone a hard disk

This guide will take the cloning system hard disk to a smaller SSD as an example. To follow it, you can download AOMEI Partition Assistant Standard to have a try!

Step 1. Install and launch AOMEI Partition Assistant, and then click "All Tools" and "Disk Clone Wizard".

Tips: To clone the only system drive to a new disk, for example, move windows 10 to SSD, please select “Migrate OS to SSD” instead.

Step 2. In the pop-up window, choose "Clone Disk Quickly" as you are going to copy the hard disk to a smaller SSD.

Note: AOMEI Partition Assistant provides you with two methods for cloning hard disk: "Clone Disk Quickly" which only copies the used space of the disk. "Sector-by-Sector Clone" will copy all sectors of the disk no matter whether it is used or not.

Step 3. Choose the hard disk that you need to clone as the source disk and click "Next".

Step 4. Select the destination disk to put the data of the source disk on, and then click "Next".

Tips: You can tick "Optimize the performance of SSD" to improve the reading and writing speed of SSD if the selected destination disk is an SSD storage. If there are partitions on the destination disk, they will be deleted. Therefore, if these data are useful for you, please make a backup of them with AOMEI Backupper.

Step 5. In this window, this program allows you to adjust the partition size on the destination disk.

Note: There are three options for you: “Clone without resizing partition”, “Fit partition to entire disk” and “Edit partition on this disk”. After finishing the adjustment, please click "Next". As you clone to a smaller SSD, the first option is grayed out.

Step 6. You can preview the disk cloning operating by viewing the "Pending Operations". To commit the "Pending Operations", please click "Apply" and "Proceed".

As for "Sector-by-Sector Clone", the detailed steps are very similar to that of "Clone Disk Quickly". The only two parts that are different are step 2 and step 3. In step 2, you should select “Sector-by-Sector Clone” as the copy method; in step3, you should make sure that the size of the destination disk is no less than the size of the source disk according to the principle of the way of copy, no matter how less the used space is in the source disk. The rest operation is just the same as what was described for "Clone Disk Quickly".

✍ Tips:
●If the hard disk you want to clone contains a system boot partition, the operation will be completed under the "PreOS Mode". Do not worry that you don’t know how to get into PreOS Mode to operate, because Partition Assistant will help you; the only thing you have to do is to follow it.
●To copy hard disk or migrate OS from GPT disk to MBR, the limitation of MBR partition style should be taken into consideration. MBR supports up to four primary partitions and is no bigger than 2TB.
●The deleted or lost files can only be copied to the destination hard disk through the “Sector-by-Sector Clone” method.
●In addition to the hard disk clone, AOMEI Partition Assistant also provides a "Partition Clone Wizard" for cloning a specific partition.
●Dynamic disk, Offline disks could not be set as the target disk.
